Remote Learning

 Our Aim

At St John’s CE Academy, our remote learning provision is designed to ensure that education can continue during any period of significant disruption, including partial or full school closure, individual pupil absence, or other circumstances that prevent pupils from attending school in person.

We aim to:
  • Provide continuity of learning so pupils can continue to make progress
  • Maintain strong relationships between school, pupils and families
  • Offer a clear structure and routine to support engagement and wellbeing
  • Deliver high-quality learning that reflects our in-school curriculum and expectations
  • Ensure all pupils, including those with additional needs, can access learning appropriately and successfully

Our approach to Remote Learning

Remote learning may include a combination of live teaching, recorded explanations, independent tasks, online platforms and curriculum resources shared through our agreed school systems. The exact approach will depend on the age of pupils, the nature of the disruption and the needs of individual learners.

Where appropriate, learning will follow the planned curriculum sequence so that pupils remain aligned with their in-school learning journey.

Our remote learning will reflect the same principles that underpin effective teaching in the classroom. This includes:

  • Revisiting and strengthening prior learning
  • Clear explanations and carefully sequenced new learning
  • Modelling and worked examples
  • Opportunities for practice and independent application
  • Checks for understanding and responsive feedback
  • Appropriate challenge, support and scaffolding
  • Consistent routines and clear expectations

Communication, Care and Engagement

We recognise that regular contact and clear communication are essential in supporting motivation, wellbeing and a continued sense of belonging.

During periods of remote learning, we will:

  • Maintain regular communication with pupils and families
  • Provide clear guidance about expectations, routines and deadlines
  • Use tutor time or pastoral check-ins where appropriate
  • Monitor engagement and follow up concerns promptly
  • Offer support for pupils experiencing barriers to learning
  • Work closely with families to help pupils remain connected and successful

Our SEND team and pastoral staff will provide additional contact and tailored support for pupils who may need it.

Safeguarding and Online Safety

Safeguarding remains our highest priority at all times. To ensure remote learning is safe, secure and professional, we will:

  • Use approved school platforms and communication systems only
  • Maintain the same professional standards expected in school
  • Provide clear expectations for behaviour and online conduct
  • Protect passwords, logins and personal information
  • Monitor online interactions appropriately
  • Follow data protection requirements at all times
  • Report and respond to any safeguarding concerns in line with school procedures
  • Ensure access arrangements are secure and appropriate for pupils

Our Commitment

Remote learning is designed to complement, not replace, the high-quality teaching and relationships pupils experience in school. Our priority will always be to keep pupils learning, connected and supported, whatever the circumstances.
