Curriculum Overview

At St John’s, we offer an academically rigorous & rich curriculum that nurtures a genuine love of learning. As an all-through (2–16) school, we secure a coherent journey & shared pedagogy; smooth transition from primary to secondary; & earlier access to specialist teaching & facilities. We set high aspirations in every area of education, ensuring each learner is known, challenged, & inspired to achieve their very best.

Our curriculum is coherent, purposeful, & inclusive, designed to develop knowledge, skills, & success. Pupils build deep understanding, develop transferable skills, & experience success that lasts. Learning takes place in calm, well-structured classrooms where engagement & enjoyment make working hard meaningful & rewarding. We nurture ambitious, lifelong learners who build independence & use knowledge well for themselves, others, & the wider world.

Our curriculum is carefully planned from age 2–16 so that every subject has clear purpose, strong progression and lasting impact. A unique strength of St John’s is our all-through model, where curriculum leaders across our primary and secondary phases work closely together to design a coherent journey from the earliest years to age sixteen. This shared approach helps us provide consistency, smooth progression and strong foundations at every stage of a child’s education.

We design learning through the following principles:
  • Clear Subject Purpose: Each subject has a clear purpose and long-term value. It connects to our school vision, values and Church of England ethos, helping pupils understand why their learning matters.
  • Big Ideas and Key Concepts: Subjects are built around the important ideas, concepts and ways of thinking that shape them. This helps pupils make connections, think deeply and ask meaningful questions.
  • Carefully Chosen Content: We prioritise the most important knowledge and skills, ensuring learning is relevant, ambitious and appropriate for each stage of development.
  • Strong Sequencing and Progression: Learning is carefully ordered so that knowledge and skills build over time. Previous learning is revisited, understanding is strengthened and pupils are well prepared for what comes next.
  • Meaningful Connections: We make links within subjects and across the wider curriculum so that pupils can apply what they know, strengthen memory and see learning in a wider context.
  • High-Quality Learning Experiences: Curriculum plans are translated into engaging lessons and experiences that promote consistency, accessibility and success for all learners.
  • Inclusive Resources and Materials: Resources are thoughtfully designed to promote engagement, remove barriers and support high-quality teaching and learning through clarity, accessibility, consistency and purposeful practice.
