Mathematics at St. John’s CE Academy

At St. John’s CE Academy, our Mathematics curriculum reflects our vision, Grow, Flourish, and Fly, and is deeply rooted in our core values of Respect, Courage, and Kindness. We believe every moment is an opportunity to deepen and extend each child’s mathematical knowledge and understanding, fostering confidence and success in this critical subject.

Our carefully designed curriculum ensures:

  • Core Skill Mastery: Pupils rehearse essential facts, methods, and strategies daily to build a strong foundation for solving mathematical problems.
  • Deep Understanding: Lessons include opportunities to explain, justify, and prove concepts using informal and diagrammatic methods.
  • Connection Building: Every Maths lesson starts with revisiting prior arithmetic knowledge, linking past and current learning to deepen understanding. Vocabulary is recapped, and children discuss what they already know to support their new learning.
  • Learning Journeys: Pupils are aware of their Maths Learning Journey each week and understand the purpose behind their learning.

Our long-term plans follow the structured steps of White Rose Maths, adapted to meet the needs of our pupils. We enrich our curriculum with high-quality resources such as NCETM and NRICH, ensuring a dynamic and engaging approach to mathematics.

Sequences of Learning

Our sequences of learning ensure pupils are familiar with the facts and methods needed to develop problem-solving strategies. Carefully planned questions guide pupils to build on their existing knowledge and encourage deeper thinking.

Assessment in Mathematics

We use a comprehensive approach to assessment:

  • Formative Assessment: Teachers continuously assess pupils through activities such as questioning, quizzing, marking, and addressing misconceptions during lessons.
  • Summative Assessment: Each term, pupils from Years 1-6 participate in assessments focusing on arithmetic and reasoning. Results are discussed in pupil progress meetings, and targeted interventions are implemented for pupils not meeting age-related expectations.
  • Statutory Assessment:
    • End-of-Key-Stage statutory assessments take place every May.
    • The Year 4 Multiplication Check is conducted in June.
    • The EYFS profile against the Early Learning Goals is completed in June.

At St. John’s, we are committed to fostering a love of Mathematics, equipping every child with the tools they need to Grow, Flourish, and Fly in their learning journey and beyond.
